20Gold IRA Statistics for 2026
Twenty numbers on gold and retirement accounts: what the metal has done, who is buying it, how much Americans hold in IRAs, what the IRS allows and what regulators say bad dealers cost savers. Every figure is traced to its source.

The gold market behind the accounts
A gold IRA is only as interesting as the metal inside it, so start with the market. The last two years have been the most dramatic for gold in half a century — and 2026 has already shown that the price moves in both directions. For a look at how the metal behaved in an earlier shock, see how COVID-19 affected gold prices.
No. 01
$5,000
per ounce: gold crossed this level for the first time in January 2026. By the second quarter the price had eased back from its record highs.
The steadiest buyers of gold are not retirees. They are central banks, which have roughly doubled their pace of purchases compared with the previous decade.
No. 07
863t
was added to official reserves by central banks in 2025. That is strong by historical standards, though below the 1,000-tonne mark passed in each of the three years before.
is the size of the U.S. government’s gold reserve (261.5 million fine troy ounces), the largest reported national holding in the world. It has barely changed in decades.
Here the data gets thin. IRAs are enormous; the slice held in physical metals is small and nobody publishes an official count. That gap is the most important statistic on this page. If you are comparing providers, our guide to the best gold IRA companies lays out minimums and fees side by side.

accounts held unconventional assets — real estate, private equity, precious metals and the like — at 17 custodians surveyed by the GAO for 2015. It remains the best official count, and no agency publishes a figure for gold IRAs alone.

Part IV
The rules, in numbers
A gold IRA is an ordinary self-directed IRA with extra conditions attached to what it may hold and where. Four numbers cover most of what trips people up. Our Precious Metals Resource Center explains each in more detail.
No. 15
$7,500
is the 2026 IRA contribution limit, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older. The cap is shared across all your IRAs, so most gold IRAs are funded by rollover rather than new contributions.
is the minimum purity for gold bullion in an IRA. The one notable exception is the American Gold Eagle, at 91.67%. The metal must be held by the trustee — home storage does not qualify.
is the age at which required minimum distributions begin for traditional IRAs, including those holding metal. Missing one can cost an excise tax of 25% of the shortfall.
The largest risk in a gold IRA is rarely the gold price. It is what you pay to get in. Regulators have been blunt about it, which is why it pays to read independent write-ups — such as our Augusta Precious Metals review and our comparison of the best online gold dealers — before sending money anywhere.
No. 19
$500M+
in allegedly fraudulent precious metals sales has been charged by the CFTC over the past decade, much of it aimed at retirement savers.
of victims’ savings were drained by markups, fees and commissions in some gold and silver IRA frauds. Dishonest dealers have charged spreads above 300%; reputable ones may charge under 20%.
Gold has had a historic run: a 60%-plus year in 2025, a first move through $5,000 an ounce in early 2026, and central banks buying at about twice the pace of the previous decade. It has also shown, within the same six months, that it can give ground — ETF investors were net sellers by the second quarter.
Against that, the gold IRA itself is a small and poorly measured corner of a US$19.9 trillion IRA market. There is no official count of accounts, the contribution limit is modest, and the rules on purity, custody and withdrawals are strict. The clearest hard numbers come from regulators, and they concern cost: the spread a dealer charges matters more to most savers than next year’s gold price.
First, government and statutory sources: the IRS, the Internal Revenue Code, the U.S. Treasury, the GAO and the CFTC. Second, the World Gold Council, the standard reference for gold supply and demand (its data is compiled by Metals Focus). Third, ICI and Gallup for retirement assets and public opinion.
Bias and what we left out
The World Gold Council is funded by gold miners, so we used its measured figures and not its forecasts. We excluded statistics published by gold IRA dealers — including claims about the “size of the gold IRA market” or the “share of Americans who own a gold IRA” — because none could be traced to an independent dataset.
Limitations
The GAO account figure is from 2015 and covers all unconventional assets, not gold alone. The ICI, Gallup 2026 and central bank survey figures were confirmed through republished coverage, not the original files. The 2025 return is as of the end of November 2025. The CFTC totals are allegations in enforcement actions. Gold prices move daily; this page does not track them.
