Defense Economic
Transition Assistance (DETA)
Regional Contacts
The DETA program
in New York has dedicated business advisors in five regions of the
state. The emphasis of outreach may vary from one region to another,
but all provide in-depth market research, accounting and finance
advice, access to capital, and information about international trade
opportunities, in addition to one-to-one counseling, specialized
training, and customized business research.
Albany - Capital
District and Hudson Valley
The DETA advisors are responsive to areas of continuing need and,
for example, are participating in an ongoing collaboration with
the Arsenal Business and Technology Partnership to place appropriate
businesses in reconditioned space at the Arsenal. Capital District
companies interested in receiving more information about in-depth
strategic business assistance or SBA’s DELTA loan program
can call the Albany SBDC at 518-485-7647.
Binghamton
- Southern Tier
The Southern Tier is one of the state’s manufacturing hubs
with a few large manufacturers still in operation. The manufacturing
entities and other suppliers in the area are more likely to be defense
subcontractors than prime contractors. DETA advisors can assist
individuals and small businesses interested in doing business with
the government and large firms. Southern Tier companies interested
in receiving more information about in-depth strategic business
assistance or SBA's DELTA loan program can call the Binghamton SBDC
at 607-777-4024.
Buffalo -
Western New York
The greater Buffalo area is similar to hundreds of American cities,
many of them in New York State, that have been forced to adjust
to changing economic conditions and forced to watch as key industries
were devastated and either closed down or moved out of state. DETA
advisors provide invaluable assistance to help keep some of the
businesses in the area. Western New York companies interested in
receiving more information about in-depth strategic business assistance
or SBA's DELTA loan program can call the Buffalo SBDC at 716-878-4030.
Long Island
- Farmingdale and Stony Brook
Due to the strong reliance of many Long Island businesses on the
aerospace industry and on subcontracts from large defense contracts,
such as Grumman and Lockheed Martin, the DETA program is critically
important to the region. In addition to several hundred prime contractors,
the region also has a significant number of second- and third-tier
suppliers and subs that are dependent upon defense contracts. Long
Island companies interested in receiving information about in-depth
strategic business assistance or SBA’s DELTA loan program
can call the Stony Brook SBDC at 631-632-9070, or the Farmingdale
SBDC at 631-429-2765.
Watertown
- Northern New York
The continuous nature of the deployment of the 10th Mountain Division
has removed a significant number of people from the economy.
While this is not the typical adverse impact envisioned under the
DETA program, it results in a negative impact on a local economy.
DETA presence in the immediate area can provide intervention services
to impacted businesses and individuals. Northern New York companies
interested in receiving more information about in-depth strategic
business assistance or SBA's DELTA loan program can call the Watertown
SBDC at 315-782-9262.
The
NYS DETA program coordinator is based
at the Binghamton SBDC at 607-777-4024.
